NO-RUN STARTERS
Tulane’s starting rotation on opening weekend did exactly what they were asked to do. The trio of Corey Merrill, Alex Massey and Emerson Gibbs did not only keep the Green Wave in each game they started, they also kept the Fighting Illini off the scoreboard completely. Merrill (6.0 innings), Massey (7.0 innings) and Gibbs (6.1 innings) did not allow a single run to Illinois while they were on the mound. Joining them was Patrick Duester (2.0 innings) against Alabama A&M on Wednesday, Feb. 24, meaning Tulane starting pitching has gone 20.1 innings so far this year without allowing a run.

LITTLE MASSEY
Freshman hurler Ross Massey took to the mound in the third inning of Tulane’s Feb. 24 contest against Alabama A&M and pitched 4.0 perfect innings while adding four strikeouts. Ross Massey, whose older brother Alex is a starting pitcher in the weekend rotation, was one of five pitchers to help combine for a two-hit shutout of the Bulldogs on Wednesday. The last time Tulane pitched a two-hitter? The elder Massey did so at Houston on April 12 last season.

RAIN AND WIND
Rain and wind were the reasons behind Tulane’s postponement of their contest against Alabama A&M on Tuesday, Feb. 23. The game was played the next day. Inclement weather moved into the area early Tuesday, with many reports of tornadoes in the area, forcing the closure of Tulane University.

ROBBED NOT ONCE, BUT TWICE
Jeremy Montalbano may have wished that Tulane’s game against Alabama A&M on Wednesday, Feb. 24 was pushed back one more day. Despite the weather allowing for baseball, the wind blew straight into Greer Field at Turchin Stadium during Tulane’s 7-0 defeat of the Bulldogs. The one person most affected by Mother Nature? Montalbano. The redshirt-junior transfer hit two balls that would have easily been home runs on any other day at the park, but the wind kept them in play for easy outs near the wall in left center.

CALLING IN THE CLOSER…ON THE RADIO
“The Voice of the Green Wave” Todd Graffagnini hasn’t missed many baseball games in 25 years on air. But Wednesday, Feb. 24, was a rare occurrence for the play-by-play man. Due to the inclement weather in the area on Tuesday, forcing the move of the game to Wednesday. However, with the Tulane men’s basketball team playing across campus at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Graffagnini had a prior obligation to call their game. Fortunately, Graffagnini was able to go to the bullpen and call in one of the finest in the area in New Orleans Zephyrs play-by-play man, Tim Grubbs. An agreement before the contest called for Grubbs to show up at a specific time to take over. But since the game went by in a mere 2 hours and 19 minutes, all Grubbs got to call was the ninth inning. It wasn’t a save situation, though, as Tulane defeated Alabama A&M, 7-0.
