Today marks the release of Harper Lee’s hotly anticipated follow-up to her classic novel, TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD. Here at WRBH, we made sure to have a downloaded copy of GO SET A WATCHMAN ready to roll and  we will begin recording it today. While we’ll be debuting the book during our Best Selling Fiction program August 12th, we took some time this morning to ask our volunteer reader, Charlotte Travieso, about her expectations and thoughts on Lee’s new/rediscovered work:

What are favorite parts of To Kill A Mockingbird? When did you first pick it up and read it?

I read it in high school as part of an English class assignment. And what sticks our for me the most is the rescue of the children and when Scout looks over in the corner and Boo is hiding out and she says, “Hey, Boo!” I always remembered that and I loved that. And Robert Duval played Boo in the movie and he was just perfect. I read somewhere that he…to prepare for the role he dyed his hair blond and kind of stayed out of the sunlight because [Boo] was a recluse in the book. And also, of course, Atticus in the courtroom.

What are your expectations for Go Set A Watchman?

Well, I heard it has some racial overtones which I’m not going to be really happy to read [aloud]. But it’s wonderful Harper Lee has another book after all these years. There hasn’t been very much coming out of Monroe, Alabama since. I don’t think? (Laughter)
